WE hate to break it to you, but it’s THAT time of year.

That’s right — we may look forward to winter for the excuse to bundle up in knitwear and cosy coats but the plummeting temperatures have a frosty downside for your wardrobe, too. And it involves giving up the battle for bare legs.

Tip: Floral patterns are one of this season’s biggest trends, and we love the stitching detail on this pair

While our knees have just about been able to deal with autumn’s temperatures, the sudden drop in the mercury means half-frozen legs can’t be avoided for much longer.

Choosing to have warm shins for the walk to the bus stop used to mean sacrificing on style for those who have an aversion to hosiery.

Thick black opaques don’t always do you or your outfit justice. So forget the old tangled styles that have been hiding in the back of your sock drawer since January.

Not usually known for putting function first, the fashion industry has for once embraced tights.

Tip: Double up on glitz with a pair of diamante studded tights — guaranteed to add a touch of glamour to your wardrobe

Designer brand bosses usually like to imagine everyone has as big a budget for taxis as they do, when really we’re shivering waiting for the train home. But this season they have put tights on the catwalk.

Warm legs had the seal of approval from big-name brands such as Burberry, Fendi and Balenciaga. And even the world of celebrity has wrapped up and gone all sensible.

Our favourite TV psychopath Villanelle — from hit series Killing Eve — teamed her little black dress with a barely-there pair.

Actresses Katie Holmes, Reese Witherspoon and singer Rihanna have all pulled on sheer styles too.

Tip: Check out this window-pane patterned pair, and keep the rest of your outfit simple

A thinner denier looks great with a shorter hemline as they flatter your legs instead of camouflaging them, as a thicker count will.

Lighter deniers will also look party-ready, while still providing some coverage, meaning you won’t be left with goosepimpled flesh by the end of the night.

And midi skirts might be a big hit this season, but the right pair of tights will see you being able to wear minis right through until spring.

There are a host of styles and deniers to choose from — from the classic 20 or 30 denier count that will go with anything in your winter wardrobe, to Sixties-inspired polka dot prints, and even out-of-this-world star designs.

Tip: Show your star quality in this pair – they are perfect for party season and will really make your outfit shine

Just watch out for anything that may cause a snag to avoid an emergency dash to Marks and Spencer.

And if you are unlucky enough to cause a rip in your pair — a blob of clear nail varnish or spritz of hairspray will stop a ladder from spreading further.

Here, we show you the different types of tights that will have you looking forward to the colder climate.
