Staff at the store were informed of the news last Friday.

It is understood that workers have been told they can relocate to Penneys in either Liffey Valley, Dundrum or Nutgrove if they wish.

A spokesperson for Penneys who confirmed the closure said the decision had been made due to the “close proximity” of other stores in Nutgrove and Dundrum.

They said: “In recent years, Penneys has invested in enhancing its customer offering and experience in six Dublin stores.”

‘MASSIVE BLOW’

Local Fianna Fail TD John Lahart said the news is a “massive blow for the Rathfarnham Shopping Centre and the surrounding area”.

He wrote on Facebook: “Very unfortunate news that Penneys in Rathfarnham Dublin is to close after 48 years.

“This is a massive blow for the Rathfarnham Shopping Centre and the surrounding area.

“Penneys was a huge draw to the shopping centre and I will be doing all I can to ensure that a new tenant is found for the premises as soon as possible.

“Of course its open 47 years and not 27 as my video states below – which makes it an even bigger blow for the community.”
