CORONATION Street fans spotted flashing lights and a puff of smoke as the cast filmed scenes for its Christmas special.

Onlookers near the ITV soap set heard the commotion, with people living in nearby apartments even stepping out on their balconies to get a glimpse.

As well as helter skelter ride, which was spotted at Trafford Wharf on Wednesday night, smoke was also seen coming from a building on the famous set.

In one snap, a man, who doesn’t appear to be part of the soap, whizzes down the funfair ride.

An onlooker told Manchester Evening News: “There was a flash and a puff of smoke and people could be heard screaming.

“There was a crash and a bang coming from the fair, thought to be from a gas canister as part of a storyline.

“It was around 11.45pm and people were on their balconies wondering what was going on.

They added: “One man was wearing only a pair of underpants.

“There were lots of flashing lights, a pop and smoke.”

The funfair ride will no doubt cause havoc for the Wetherfield locals after it was hinted that there might be a death in store on the soap this festive season.

Viewers are in for yet another explosive episode

Earlier this week, show stars Sally Ann Matthews and Jennie McApline teased that the Xmas special is set to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

Jennie McAlpine, 35 who plays Fiz Brown, hinted that the drama that is due to hit screens in December could even result in a character being killed off – but wouldn’t reveal who.

She told The Daily Star: “I’ve read the script for Christmas Eve.

“It’s quite dramatic. I’m not sure if I’ll be getting any turkey this year. Fiz is going to be quite busy!

Sally Ann Matthews revealed the Christmas episode is ‘beyond dramatic’[/caption]

“I can’t say if anyone dies. If I told someone that, I’d have to kill them!”

While Sally Matthews, 49, who plays Jenny Bradley, revealed the festive episodes were “beyond dramatic” after recently receiving the scripts.

She said: “What I can say is it’s beyond dramatic. It’s big and edge-of-your-seat stuff. It’s not just one story either. There are several big stories happening.

“We usually have feelgood Christmas episodes. And this year it certainly starts off that way.

“People will want to tune in for it on Christmas Day. My advice is not to have too much turkey and eggnog so you’ll still be awake enough to watch it!”

The ITV soap is never short of drama in the festive season.

In the past, viewers have been treated to the birth of David Platt on Christmas day, as well as Sally Fletcher telling husband Kevin she has breast cancer just moments before he was about to leave her for another woman.

Plus slightly more heartwarming moments, such as Hilda Ogden jubilant farewell in the Rovers Return after 23 years on the soap.
