THIS bizarre optical illusion shows a lighthouse ‘rocking back and forth’ as waves crash into it during Storm Dennis.

The video captured on the weekend shows high seas battering Fastnet Lighthouse in Cork, Ireland.

As waves crash into it, the lighthouse appears to wobble from side to side – making it look unstable.

Mary Cadogan, who captured the clip before posting it on Twitter, told CorkBeo the effect may have been caused by the lens shuddering in the wind.

Luckily, the lighthouse was left unscathed by Storm Dennis which has caused devastation across the UK.

Five people are confirmed to have died as a result of the storm, which saw winds reach up to 91mph over the weekend.

The family of Yvonne Booth, who was swept away by floodwater near Tenbury in Worcestershire on Sunday, said they had been left “devastated” after her body was found on Monday.

Four other people were killed in the deadly storm, including a man who was swept to his death after falling into a swollen river in South Wales on Sunday.

Communities across the country are also counting the cost of the weekend’s storm, which has left hundreds of properties flooded.

Fastnet Lighthouse was constructed using a dovetail masonry technique, which is now widely recognised as the best practice for building lighthouses – particularly when it comes to dangerous areas.

It seems the technique was needed over the weekend, as Fastnet Lighthouse’s weather readers recorded gusts of over 80 knots.

As well as a shuddering lens, Ms Cadogan used a high zoom when filming the lighthouse, which may have made it look like it was moving from side to side.

THE most expensive Irish whiskey in the world has hit the shelves today with a mega price tag of €35,000 per bottle.

The Midleton Very Rare Silent Distillery Whiskey has been released by Irish Distillers with just 48 bottles made available to purchase.

The peated single malt whiskey was distilled in Midleton, Co Cork, way back in 1974 and has been maturing ever since.

The bottles are part of a series of six special edition releases to mark the 200th anniversary of the old distillery in the east Cork town.

There will be one release every year until 2025, meaning the whiskies will range in age from 45 to 50-years-old.

The whiskey will be sold in special Waterford Crystal decanters.

When broken down, a standard serving of whiskey is 28 measures per glass meaning a single shot of this luxurious whiskey would set you back an eye-watering €1,250.

The Old Midleton Distillery was open between 1825 and 1975 before operations moved to the New Midleton Distillery.

In 1992, it reopened as a visitor’s centre and museum and is now known as the Jameson Experience, Midleton.

They receive around 100,000 guests per year where visitors can embark on a 75-minute tour around the grounds.

A BRAND new movie called The Last Duel that will star Hollywood legends Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer are looking for Irish extras.

The Last Duels is an Epic Period Feature Film and it will be shot in various parts of Ireland in the coming months.

It will be directed by Ridley Scott and will star Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Adam Driver and Jodie Comer.

Affleck, Damon and Nicole Holofcener have written the screenplay which is based on the book ‘The Last Duel’ by Eric Jager.

The company hiring the extras are looking to directly employ lots of film extras for huge crowd scenes in the coming months.

They revealed that they will be hosting the casting in Liberty Hall (Siptu Building), Eden Quay, Dublin 1 on Friday, February 21 anytime between 10am to 6pm.

It is paid work and the casting will be open to adults.

They have said that they are looking for anyone and that they will have featured and special extra roles and that they will be casting people on the day.

To apply you have to be living in Ireland and attend the casting call.

They also revealed that they will be filming in Wicklow, Meath and Tipperary from March.

“When called, we will discuss dates of filming and rates of pay with people and ask you to come out to the studio for fittings before your first day of filming.

The 44-year-old became a United States, Intercontinental, and Tag Team champion during his first stint under Vince McMahon, but he hasn’t enjoyed the same success since his return in 2017.

TERRIFYING footage shows passengers on a Ryanair flight crying and even gagging as the jet shakes violently during Storm Dennis.

The clip was filmed on a flight from Oujda, Morocco to Brussels, Belgium, which became caught in a strong flow of turbulence on Sunday.

In the footage, people are seen holding on the seats in front of them as the plane rocks from side to side uncontrollably.

As the shaking gets worse, passengers are heard crying and praying fearing the worst.

One person is even heard gagging although it’s unclear if they actually vomited.

The plane eventually landed in Charleroi airport while Storm Dennis raged.

Meanwhile, heart-stopping footage emerged yesterday of the moment a ferry lurches sideways after being battered by high winds and violent waves caused by Dennis.

Almost on the verge of capsizing, the dramatic footage shows the CalMac ferry battling against 80mph crosswinds as it attempted to find post in Ardrossan Harbour, Scotland, on Friday.

Storm Dennis sparked “danger to life” flood warnings as it punished the country with fierce rain and gales over the weekend.

Three people fell victim to the storm as a month’s worth of rain fell in just 48 hours and winds were recorded at a staggering speed of 91mph.

While the storm battered most parts of Britain, the crew on board the MV Caledonian in Scotland were forced to take evasive action during the adverse weather.

The scary 43-second clip was captured by onlooker William Campbell.

Clearly unphased by it all, he later boarded the ferry and joked that his journey was a “wee bit choppy”.

He told the BBC that he was used to rough weather, but speculated that some would-be visitors “might have been put off”.

After the boat fought against violent waves and fierce winds created by the storm, the managing director of CalMac, Robbie Drummond, took to Twitter to praise its crew for their skilful navigation.

He wrote: “All credit to the skill of our masters and one to consider for those pressing CalMac to take more risk.

“Safety of our passengers and crew is always our top priority.”

Earlier today Tipperary TD Alan Kelly formally launched his leadership bid.

Ged Nash, another politician who was tipped to put his name forward, ruled himself out of the running this morning and has now nominated Mr O’Riordan.

He will officially launch his bid this Friday in Dublin city centre.

Mr O’Riordan told Drivetime on RTE Radio 1: “I am going to run for Labour leadership. I’ve been nominated by Ged Nash and Ivana Bacik and I’m going to launch my campaign on Friday on Sheriff Street where I used to teach.

“I think I offer a chance for change for the Labour party. I’ve also been a member for almost 20 years and after every election defeat or every change of leadership we’ve said the same thing: ‘We’ve to work harder or we’ve to go back to basics, we need to go back to communities.’

“There are candidates for the Labour Party doing that all the time, all the time, and yet people don’t look at the Labour Party and see change.

“And politics has completely changed in Ireland over the last twenty years. Ten years ago Sinn Fein had four seats, ten years ago Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and Labour would have filled the Oireachtas, now they wouldn’t even fill a government if they were to join together.

“So a this time, when young people are looking for change and they are looking at other parties other than the Labour Party, we have to position ourselves as a party of change.”

Mr Kelly has been nominated by newly elected TDs Dublin Fingal’s Duncan Smith and Cork East’s Sean Sherlock.

Speaking after putting forward his bid today, Kelly said that he would fight fearlessly and relentlessly to restore Labour to leadership of Ireland’s left.

The Portroe native said: “The reality of where we are at today as a country is that, as we reach full employment and our economy grows, more and more people are being left behind.

“For the Labour Party, the party of the worker, that is unacceptable and that is what we will prioritise if I am elected leader. There must be more to society than running to stand still.”

Newman, 42, is in a “serious condition” after his car hit a wall at 200mph and flipped in front of shocked spectators.

He is being treated at Halifax Medical Center, although it’s understood his injuries are not life-threatening.

Newman was battling for the lead when his car careened into the barrier before flipping into the air during the final lap of the Daytona 500 in Florida.

Fellow racer Ryan Blaney had pushed Newman’s car out in front of the others – a common move drivers use to edge out their opponents in order to snag the lead.

But Newman’s car ploughed into the barrier before flying into the air and smashing into another motor at about 8.10pm.

Smoke and sparks were sent flying in the chaos and a tire tumbled across the track.

Newman remained silent on his radio as his team urged him to make contact while medics rushed onto the track.

His car skidded across the finish line upside down and in flames.

President Donald Trump offered prayers to the “great and brave” racer.

The President tweeted: “Praying for Ryan Newman, a great and brave NASCAR driver! #PrayingForRyan.”

Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg also offered his sympathies to the driver, who is a native of the South Bend mayor’s town in Indiana.

“Praying for a son of South Bend tonight, as we all wish the best for @RyanJNewman and his family after today’s devastating accident.”

Ryan Blaney, who was driving the car behind Ryan Newman, said he is feeling “really bad about it” in an interview with Media ITE.

He said: “I was committed to pushing him to the win, try to have a ford win it and I don’t know, we got bumpers hooked up wrong and turned him. I hope he’s all right. That looked pretty bad.”

He added: “I feel really bad about it. Close one but I hope Ryan’s all right.”

The horrific accident was one of many crashes that happened at the annual race held in the coastal city.

Nearly 20 cars were taken out in an accident with fewer than 20 laps to go, followed by several others as drivers vied for the top spot in NASCAR’s biggest race.

The race was postponed for the second time in 62 years because of rain delays, Fox News reported.

AFTER losing her parents and brother in the space of five years, Renatta Keith’s world fell apart.

In 2009, Renatta lost her mum to drug addiction, having been unaware she was battling an opioid habit until it was too late.

Just four years later, her dad, who served as a soldier in Iraq, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease on his return home. He died not long afterwards, and Renatta was the one to find his body.

Dealing with losing her parents in such a short space of time, Renatta, from Huntsville, Alabama, relied on food as her emotional crutch.

Yet, her nightmare ordeal continued when just a year after her dad’s death. Renatta’s brother died of asphyxiation from alcohol.

Consumed by grief, the 37-year-old turned to food.

She would consume almost an entire litre of Coke a day, and gorged on takeaways and sugary treats all day, causing her weight to spiral out of control.

At her heaviest, Renatta weighed 20.7 stone – 289lbs.

“She had been hiding an opioid addiction from the family and it got out of control really quickly.

“I ate a day’s calories and sugar before noon. I ate mostly all my meals from a drive-through.”

It was only when she was on a trip to LA that Renatta realised the toll grief had taken on her waistline.

Boarding the flight, she realised she couldn’t fit into her seat, and the airline staff had to provide a seat belt extender.

Renatta was horrified and vowed to overhaul her lifestyle.

Not long afterwards, she was diagnosed with a back problem that resulted in her needing an operation to fuse her spine together.

“The humiliation made me realise I had to do something about my weight.

“I needed to treat my body better.

“It all came to a head when I had surgery – a type of spinal fusion.

“The recovery and pain made me realise how I had taken my body for granted and had to lose weight to stop further damage to my spine.”

In a bid to live a healthier life, Renatta started to track her daily food intake to get a better understanding of her diet.

She ditched diet drinks, which helped stop her cravings for sugary food. And she went on the Keto diet to help reduce her carb intake.

The diet overhaul, and working out three times a week with a personal trainer, helped Renatta shed a staggering 10.7 stone – 140lbs – over the course of two years.

She said she’s learned to deal with her grief, without relying on food, and feels “reborn”, living life to the full.

“Once I started working out and eating well, I had clarity and focus like I never experienced,” she said.

“I kept a photo of my scar from my spinal surgery and it motivated me to keep going.

“I had been in the place of not being able to bend, walk, sit too long, or stand too long.

“I knew that pain and never wanted to experience it again. I was determined to do everything I could to help me not need additional surgery.”

Renatta, who has one 16-year-old daughter, now continues to keep a low-carb diet but sneaks in an occasional treat here and there to reward herself for her consistent hardwork and commitment.

She keeps herself active with pilates classes five times a week and enjoys kayaking, walking on nature trails and hiking.

Speaking about her current lifestyle, Renatta said: “I still eat low carbs because cutting sugar helps me keep my inflammation down.

“I do have sushi and a cupcake monthly, because life without those just don’t seem very fun to me!

“I don’t call these cheat meals, I call them earned meals because I work hard and earn them.

“Having these earned meals helps me mentally, I know that I can have them and that keeps me focused and on track during the week.”

Renatta has since started her Instagram page, where she posts photos of healthy meals and her incredible weight loss transformation to over 40.6K followers.

She wanted to share her story and motivate people to start their own weight loss journeys, with the hopes of inspiring others to find their path to healing.

In a few words of advice to others who are embarking on their own healing and weight loss journeys, Renatta said: “Instead of just diving in another weight loss programme spend some time working on and nurturing your mental health first, figure out your why. Why did you gain this weight?

“Why are you overweight? I learned losing weight wasn’t enough until I changed all the behaviours and negative thinking about myself that got me there.

“There are wonderful doctors out there so never be ashamed of reaching out and getting mentally fit, not just physically fit.”

A MAN is accused of raping and killing his tiny baby cousin at a family wedding.

The 30-year-old alleged rapist is said to have asked the baby’s mum – his aunt – if he could take the five-month-old off to “play” while they attended a wedding in the northeastern city of Daudnager  in India.

But after two hours the pair still hadn’t returned and the girl’s parents began to panic.

A huge search party was launched with nearby villagers helping out.

Some locals say they found the man lying next to the baby, who was motionless.

The girl’s horrified parents rushed her to Vivekananda Polyclinic hospital  where she was referred to KGMU trauma centre.

She was pronounced dead at the hospital.

An autopsy will confirm whether the baby was raped.

In the panicked aftermath, the accused rapist managed to slip away but was later detained by police

The girl’s dad filed murder, rape and kidnap cases against his cousin the next day.

It comes after an eight-year-old died after enduring years of horrific sex abuse at the hands of 16 men.

According to local reports, the little girl was taken to a hospital after falling unconscious in her bathroom at home.

Before losing consciousness, the eight-year-old had complained about stomach problems.

After hearing no answer from the other side of the door, her worried parents broke down the bathroom door brought her straight to the hospital.

The girl was brought to a hospital in Chennai, the capital city of the Indian State of Tamil Nadu.

As soon as they arrived at the hospital the girl was declared dead.

The police are waiting for the postmortem report to ascertain the exact cause of her death.

IT’S one of the biggest nights in the musical calendar, and the stars have certainly brought their fashion A-game to tonight’s Brit Awards.

When she turned the side, she revealed the dress had a daring side slit.

This year, no women up for either Group Of The Year or top album.

Just two female artists, British singer-songwriter Mabel and US star Normani, are nominated for Song Of The Year alongside nine male artists up for the award.

Mabel, whose break-through track Don’t Call Me Up peaked at No3, is also the sole female nominee for New Artist Of The Year.

Outside of the Male and Female categories, only six of the 28 nominations up for grabs were handed to women — a paltry 21 per cent.That’s just above the 16 per cent of female nominees at the very first Brits in 1977.

‘PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE’

A Ryanair spokesperson said: “The crew of this flight from Poznan to Dublin (17 Feb) called ahead to request medical assistance upon arrival after two passengers became ill on board.

“As a precautionary measure, the aircraft was met by emergency services.

“Upon assessment by medical staff, it was deemed safe for passengers to disembark.

“Further medical examinations were carried out on the two passengers in question, who tested negative for any virus.

“In line with procedures and also as a precautionary measure, the aircraft was disinfected before returning to service.”

CRUISE SHIP TESTS

Meanwhile, two Irish citizens who were on board the Princess Diamond Cruise Ship have tested positive for coronavirus. 

The pair are currently being treated in hospital in Japan after the ship docked off at Yokahama.

It is understood that both share dual citizenship with another EU country and do not normally reside in Ireland.

Speaking this afternoon, Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said: “Six Irish citizens were on board the Princess Diamond Cruise Ship, which is currently docked off Yokahama, Japan.

“Two of these tested positive for COVID-19 and are currently being treated in hospital in Japan.

“These citizens share dual citizenship with another EU member state and are not normally resident in Ireland.

“Our Embassy in Tokyo is in ongoing contact with them regarding their consular needs.

“We are also in close contact with those who remain in quarantine on the ship.

“We are working with our EU Partners and other like-minded countries regarding options for their return.”

GARDAI have launched an investigation after a body part washed up in Donegal.

It is understood the leg was found by a walker at Bunbeg Beach.

A Garda confirmed that searches are now ongoing in the area.

The area has been cordoned off and a full investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the discovery.

A spokesman said: “Gardai and the Coast Guard are currently carrying out searches along the coastline following the discovery of human remains on Bunbeg Beach, Donegal, today 18th February 2020.

“A scene is currently in place. Investigations are ongoing.”

Shishkin fell on his hurdling debut but has since won two on the spin, the latest of those a mighty win in the Sidney Banks at Huntingdon.

Henderson added: “I think he’s very good and he’s looked that in a bumper and two novices.

“He looks very efficient and he’s got to prove himself and this will be a much bigger test than he’s had so far. But he’s been very impressive and doesn’t seem to lack experience.

“You’d have to think he’d be one of our best chances and he’s looked very good.

“He’s a genuine two-miler and it’s a good race to win because it gets the ball rolling and the pressure’s off then a bit. You can get some confidence for the week.”

Henderson admitted he could be considered the likeliest of his younger horses to become the next ‘Seven Barrows star’ largely thanks to his turn of foot.

He continued: “He races professionally and then you press a button and it works, which is what makes life easy for him.

“It’s a proper gear change. I think he’ll be fine on the track at Cheltenham as he’s a great mover with lovely balance. I already can’t wait to see him over fences.”

Henderson won the race with superstar Altior back in 2016 and could also run exciting novice Chantry House in the race, although the option of the Ballymore remains.

He said: “I’m not sure entirely which way Chantry House will go, as he is in the Ballymore and JP has obviously got Sporting John as well.

“He was very green at Cheltenham but when he went to Newbury the other day he was foot perfect.

“He travelled like a good horse, jumped like a good horse and he went away like a good horse.”

DARRAGH MALONEY is one of the most well known faces in Irish sports broadcasting – fronting RTE’s Champions League coverage.

Maloney joined the station in 1995 – taking a role with RTE radio before moving into RTE TV Sport in 1999.

How did he get into broadcasting originally?

Born in 1972, Maloney did hospital radio while in his early days at school before going on to study journalism at college.

He had a work-experience role at Century Radio before getting a position at FM104 and then on to Donnybrook to work with the national broadcaster.

What are his favourite sports moments?

Maloney is lucky enough to have been involved in some of Irish sports greatest moments.

In an interview with SportForBusiness, he picked his top two.

One was at the 2002 World Cup final as a fan – despite working the previous night on the 3rd place play-off.

Commenting on the night, he said: “That World Cup was my first to see ‘live’ and it was an incredible trip and I got to see some amazing players in great matches and to get to the final was the perfect ending.”

The other, was Ireland’s win over Italy at Euro 2016. It was the first tournament he worked on since the legendary Bill O’Herlihy’s passing and Maloney described it as ‘pretty special’ sitting in the studio that night.

On getting counselling to help with dealing with grief:

In 2018, Maloney opened up about the struggles he had after his father passed away and encouraged anyone else in a similar position to go to counselling.

Speaking in the RTE Guide in 2018, he said: “He was just 66, retired only nine months.

“He came indoors, said to Mam that he wasn’t feeling well and went for a lie down. Half an hour later or so, he was gone — a ­massive heart attack.”

“It was horrific for the family, but I ­suppose the good thing is that Dad didn’t know about it.

“It was the greatest shock I’ve ever had and made me reassess my life. Everything was going well and then it was like the world stopped.

“But he is with me every day now.

“I went back into work after ten days or so and it was too soon.

“I just wanted to throw myself into work, distract myself, but didn’t really address the problem in front of me.

“After about 18 months, I went for counselling.
