JANUARY is one of the cheapest times of the year to travel thanks to the number of people watching their pennies after Christmas.

But it’s also one of the best times of the year to book your next holiday as lots of travel firms have sales on.

For example, British Airways kicked off their annual January Sale last month – just after Virgin Atlantic launched theirs.

EasyJet also have a sale on flights, with up to 20 per cent off.

For a bit of holiday inspiration, Sun Online Travel has rounded up some of the best new hotels opening later this year.

All of them are budget-friendly, with rooms starting from £150 a night or less, and some are right here in the UK.

Rooms start from €145 (£123) per night.

One of the cheapest times of the year to fly to Amsterdam is in September, with return flights starting from just £48.

The Mama Shelter brand comes from the the founders of Club Med – they opened a hotel in London last year with free on-demand porn.

For those who don’t want to be stuck in their room, there’s a restaurant serving up comfort food and a rooftop space where you can take in views of Paris.

Rooms start from €109 (£92) per night.

Return flights to Paris start from £50 in September, or you could go via Eurostar or ferry.

Hotel Brooklyn, Manchester – February 2020

The New York City-inspired Hotel Brooklyn will be opening near Manchester’s Chinatown and the famous Canal Street.

In your room, you’ll have everything from organic bamboo toothbrushes to ethically sourced toothpaste.

Downstairs, there’s a bar and restaurant serving up both US and European dishes.

Room start from £145 a night, including breakfast.

British hotel brand Generator are opening a new location in the US, in the Dupont Circle neighbourhood of Washington DC.

It’s a mixture of hostel and hotel, with private rooms starting from $114 (£87) a night.

The new property will have its own swimming pool, chill out areas and, for those travelling solo, the option to join group dinners or events.

Flights to Washington from the UK are surprisingly affordable as well – the cheapest we’ve seen starts from £330 return.

Universal Endless Summer Resort, Orlando – March 2020

Good news for families heading to Orlando next year – Universal’s new hotel, Endless Summer Resort: Dockside Inn and Suites, will be launching in March.

It’s one of the most affordable hotels near the theme parks, with rooms starting from $85 (£65) a night.

For those visiting Universal, it’s even better value as guests who stay at the property will get free Early Park Admission and free shuttle service to the park.

In terms of the cheapest time of the year to fly there, we found return flights in November from £266.

KASA Hotel Riviera Maya, Puerto Aventuras – May 2020

Brits looking for a posh getaway without the hefty price tag should head to the new KASA Hotel Riviera Maya.

The new property, which is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, is located in an exclusive “beach, marine and golf community” called Puerto Aventuras.

The concierge on site will be able to help you sort activities ranging from diving with sea turtles to bike tours of the region’s Mayan ruins.

Rooms start from £83 per night, including breakfast.

The nearest airport is Cozumel, with flights from £581 return in November, one of the cheapest months to travel.

Alternatively fly to Cancun, where return flights are available from around £430 year round.

Selina Liverpool, Liverpool – May 2020

Selina Liverpool is taking over the first ever YMCA building, with its mixture of dorms, suites and loft rooms.

There’s plenty to keep guests occupied on site, including a restaurant, coffee shop, wellness space and cinema room.

And in the evenings, the hotel is planning to host events and live entertainment in one of its many bars.

The private rooms start from £65 a night.

Hilton Garden Inn Faroe Islands, Torshavn – July 2020

The famously remote Faroe Islands is getting its first Hilton Garden Inn and it’s going to be located in the capital Torshavn.

The sea-view property is within walking distance to the city centre and the harbour and has its own restaurant, shop and spa.

Nearby, there’s the Svartafoss Waterfall, Nordic House, and the National Museum of the Faroe Islands.

The hotel hasn’t confirmed the exact price yet but said that it will be under £100 a night.

There are no direct flights from the UK – return fares start from around £180 in summer with a stop in Copenhagen.

The Crowne Plaza Adelaide will be in the new Frome Central Tower One – the tallest building in the city.

With check-in on level 10, the rooms are almost guaranteed to have great views, and there are some great bars and restaurants in the area.

However, the hotel’s best feature will be its outdoor pool and bar area, which overlooks the city.

Rooms will start from around £130 a night.

Return flights to Adelaide start from around £625 in September.

PASSENGER planes could soon be flying in V-shape flocks in a bid to cut down on carbon emissions and save on fuel.

European manufacturer Airbus says flight technology is now mature enough to use a V-shaped formation which allows aircraft to ride on the coattails of each other.

The Airbus plan called Fello’fly, is the latest attempt for flight engineers to mimic the flight of birds. Within six months two A350 planes are set to make a long-haul formation flight to prove the so-called “wake energy retrieval” is safe and reliable.

Dr Sandra Bour Schaeffer, chief executive of Airbus UpNext said: “We’ve known about the efficiency of migrating birds for a long time.

“The air is smooth and easy to ride and does not impact the comfort of passengers.

“There is huge potential in it.”

Formation flying will depend on the precise co-ordination of flight paths and use satellite positioning to ensure planes are suitably separated.

There is no theoretical limit to the number of planes taking part but traffic will have to be managed by controllers.

The tactic is often seen in cycling where racers ‘draft’ behind leaders of the race, following in their slipstream.

In early 2021, an airline will pair two jets, with the second flying nearly two miles from the first, on a transatlantic passenger route.

Within five years airlines will be encouraged to use the formation in a bid to save up to 10 per cent of fuel, lower costs as well as carbon emissions.

For every tonne of fuel saved, three tonnes less carbon dioxide will be left in the plane’s trail.

The new technology comes amid growing pressures around the world to cut carbon emissions.

She has popularised the Swedish term flygskam, meaning flight shame, to discourage others from flying due to its environmental impact.

British Airways recently announced plans to become the first UK airline to offset all carbon emissions on flights within the UK.

The airline’s parent company, International Airlines Group has committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

A WEDDING guest has been left shocked after the bride-to-be told her to stay away from her big day due to her recent stillbirth.

The woman – who is due to walk down the aisle in a matter of weeks – told her friend it would “take attention off her” on her “special day” if she attended the ceremony.

In a post on Facebook group ‘That’s It I’m Wedding Shaming’, the future bride’s pal – who lost her baby two months ago – revealed that they’d just had a conversation over messenger on the social media site.

“This dumpster fire of a bride is getting married in early February and I would’ve been heavily pregnant as I was due at the end of February,” wrote the guest, who is from Brisbane in Australia.

“But my daughter was stillborn in October.”

“It’s been a s****y time and both my partner and I are still just trying to get through each day and up until now everyone has been understanding and kind to us.”

So let me get this straight. You don’t want me at your wedding because the fact that my baby f***ing died might ruin your day.

The friend then proceeded to share screenshots of her conversation with the bride, who began the chat by asking if she was still planning on attending her wedding.

“I think maybe you shouldn’t. I don’t mean to be harsh but I thought you’d be over what happened by now,” she said.

“But you cried today just because some lady had a baby and its just a bit dramatic and lots of people don’t know yet because apparently you aren’t ready to tell people.”

The woman continued: “I’m trying to be as nice about this as I can but everyone will be asking why you aren’t pregnant and I don’t want them to be distracted from making me feel special.

“What happened sucks but I thought you’d had long enough to get over it so it wouldn’t be a problem.”

Clearly shocked, the guest replied: “So let me get this straight. You don’t want me at your wedding because the fact that my baby f***ing died might ruin your day.”

The bride reiterated that she “just wants to be the most important person on the day” and encouraged her pal to announce the bad news on social media so that nobody will ask her at the wedding.

However, the friend decided to cut all ties instead, summing up with: “You know what… you enjoy your wedding without me.

“I hope our friendship is worth all the attention you so desperately need you giant trash pile of a human.”

The bride called her “selfish” before nastily writing: “It’s been two months now, how much time do you really need? It’s not like you knew her.”

Social media users were furious at how the guest had been treated by her supposed-confidante.

One person wrote: “I can’t express how much contempt I have for this woman. My warmest of love for you and strength to continue to heal.”

Another commented: “Wow! Grieving is a process, different for everyone. What a colossal b****. Better off without that negativity in your life.”

A third wanted her to send the messages to the bride’s husband-to-be so he could “make a decision” about whether he actually wanted to marry her.

A MUM has revealed how doctors dismissed her itchy vulva as STIs and thrush for 30 years – but she was actually suffering from a condition which developed into a rare form of cancer.

Mum-of-two Clare Baumhauer, from Erith, Kent, visited her GP more than 30 times but they repeatedly dismissed her symptoms.

The 46-year-old is speaking out about the condition for Lichen Sclerosus Awareness week – when women are encouraged to “know your vagina”…

Growing up, I experienced years of itching and soreness around my vulva. But every GP I went to see would tell me it was thrush or cystitis, without ever even examining me.

Every trip to the doctor’s left me frustrated and none the wiser. So eventually I stopped asking for help, ignoring the discomfort and simply learning to live with it.

Aged 18, I met Matthew, who eventually became my husband. We went on to have two children – Chloe, now 20, and Ben, now 15.

It was in my 30s that my symptoms started to worsen.

Once again, I returned to the doctors. For the first time, I saw a female GP, who did examine me but gave the familiar diagnosis of thrush.

Another doctor said they thought it might be an early menopause. I was prescribed creams and ointments, but they didn’t help.

In 2016, I developed a small tear in my vulva, similar to the sort of injury a woman might experience in childbirth.

I tried to ignore it, thinking it would heal itself. But it hurt whenever I went to the loo and wiped myself down there.

I saw a female GP, who said ‘it looks like herpes. You should go to an STI clinic. How many sexual partners have you had?’

As weeks passed, the tear worsened, developing into an ulcer.

But I told Matthew “what’s the point of going back to the GP again? It never makes any difference”. I was so frustrated by all the other times I hadn’t been helped.

By February 2016, the ulcer had become so sore I was forced back to the doctor’s.

I saw another female GP, who said “it looks like herpes. You should go to an STI clinic. How many sexual partners have you had?”

I was horribly shocked. I’ve only ever had one partner: my husband. By then, I’d been with Matthew for over 25 years.

Hearing that, the doctor referred me to a specialist gynaecologist.

In March 2016, at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich, I finally got the diagnosis that had evaded me for over 30 years.

The consultant told me I’d been suffering from a long-term gynae problem called Lichen Sclerosus, which if left untreated can lead to cancer.

I had a biopsy and, following an agonising two-week wait for results, I was diagnosed with stage one vulval cancer in April 2016.

It was a dreadful shock. At this stage in my life, I didn’t even know what the vulva was, or that you could get cancer there.

The next few weeks passed in a blur. All I could think about was my family.

I feared I wouldn’t see Chloe and Ben grow up, get married or have kids.

In May 2016, at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, I had surgery to remove the tumour situated on my perineum, between my vagina and back passage.

It was by then growing aggressively and measured two centimetres in width.

Because of its location, the surgeons had to take biopsies from my lymph nodes to ensure they were clear of cancer. Luckily they were.

My recovery from the op was slow and painful – I spent most of the time laying in bed, as sitting up was just too painful, until my stitches came out.

In August 2016, with my surgery wounds healed, I began 25 sessions of radiotherapy – which caused third degree burns over my entire genital area.

The skin started to lift off and weep. Walking was painful – I felt tired and tearful all the time.

And my ordeal wasn’t over yet. During a check-up, the doctor noticed one of my lymph nodes was swollen.

In December 2016, it was removed, along with another six lymph nodes – and it turned out that three of them were cancerous. My vulva cancer was now classed as stage three.

A second bout of surgery caused lymphodema (swelling) in my vulva, abdomen, pelvis and left leg.

In January 2017, my health nosedived. I was admitted to hospital with cellulitis and sepsis.

Once I recovered from that, in March 2017, I began another 33 sessions of radiotherapy.

I also needed two more operations to remove further tissue. My therapy even set off an early menopause – for which I was prescribed HRT.

But finally, in July 2017, the treatment was finished and I was told I was cancer-free.

Since then, thankfully, I’ve remained well and have returned to my job in catering. But it still makes me angry that I was misdiagnosed for so many years.

I’ve set up an online support group with fellow patient Emma Norman, called Lichen Schlerosus and Vulva Awareness UK.

We want to urge women not to be too shy to pay attention to their vulva.

Our fear of talking about vaginas only makes it harder to get prompt diagnosis.

I’ve met women who haven’t told their own families they’ve been diagnosed with vulva cancer because they feel ashamed.

They’ve lied and said they have breast cancer or another form of cancer, because it’s easier to talk about.

I also believe many doctors are too embarrassed to investigate properly.

Please, don’t be embarrassed about your body – because if you ignore the symptoms, you won’t get diagnosed. That’s a lesson I learned the hard way.

I must have gone to various GPs at least 30 times over the years. I was also seen by gynaecological nurses, practice nurses and midwives. But nobody realised what was going on.

If my Lichen Sclerosus with its tell-tale white patches had been recognised and treated decades ago, then it should never have developed into cancer.

Now I’m committed to spreading the word, and never flinching about a topic which shouldn’t remain a taboo.

REALITY star Vicky Pattison has become the new face of Weight Watchers after fearing her diet was affecting her fertility.

The former I’m A Celeb winner, 32, said the role starts at a “perfect time” after going through a difficult period in her life.

She admits she’s had an unhealthy relationship with food in the past and is looking forward to a healthier lifestyle.

The TV personality said: “My WW journey is starting at the perfect time and I’m hoping that it will give me the fresh start that I need.

“I was recently told that my previous lifestyle was not actually healthy for me and was shocked to learn it was having an impact on my fertility.

“For me, joining WW is not just about being a certain size, but it’s about being healthy and giving my body a fighting chance so I can hopefully have kids one day.”

She joins fellow celebrity ambassadors Robbie Williams, Curtis Pritchard and Alison Hammond.

In an exclusive interview in The Sun yesterday, she revealed she has decided to freeze her eggs this year – to lift the pressure on her to have a family before she’s ready.

Vicky, who has been dating Ercan Ramadan for a year, told how she doesn’t want them to rush into having kids.

She added: “But it hasn’t been the healthiest of relationships and I have a tendency to overindulge when I am not feeling confident or happy.

“Other times, I have really restricted myself and worried about my food choices – I can’t remember the last time I went to a restaurant and selected what I wanted from the menu.

“I don’t want to have this unhealthy mindset anymore – life is for living and the reason I’ve joined the WW programme is because it’s not super restrictive, so it means I don’t need to give up things I love.”

Vicky, who will follow the WW programme with her mother Carroll, said: “Women have to stop being made to feel that they hate their bodies because they aren’t a certain size.

“This negative cycle has to end somewhere, and I want to inspire other women to shift their thinking away from a negative body image and towards creating a positive and loving relationship with their bodies.”

I listen to my body- and when it says it wants a gin and tonic… I GIVE IT ONE!!! I am a strong, healthy, realistic woman with a good balance of work and home life. I am in short, HAPPY. And that’s what I wanted you to know. Don’t allow your happiness to completely hinge on what the scales say! MET Eireann have issued a further weather warning as gusts are expected to whack a further three counties.

As the yellow two weather warnings from yesterday come to an end – a new warning comes into place in Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow

The weather warning is in place from 8am this morning until 11am – when the warning is set to end for Wexford, Cork and Waterford.

The forecaster said: “Status Yellow Wind warning for Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow

“Southerly winds with mean speeds of 50 to 65km/h will gust up to 90km/h for a time this morning.”

The end of the warnings will not sing the end of the dim weather – with a “changeable” week ahead according to the forecaster.

Today, heavy rain is expected to spread across the country with strong winds and temperatures are expected to dip to lows of 2C to 5C tonight.

The forecaster said: “Very windy for a time this morning with a band of heavy rain pushing quickly eastwards across the country.

“The rain will clear into the Irish Sea before lunchtime with sunny spells and well-scattered showers following from the west.

“Strong to gale force southerly winds will veer west to southwest by afternoon and moderate. Maximum temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees.

They added: “Dry and chilly early in the night with minimum temperatures of 2 to 5 degrees occurring before midnight.

“However, cloud will quickly thicken and outbreaks of rain will spread across the country accompanied by freshening southerly winds.

WET AND WINDY

“Temperatures will rise overnight with values ranging 7 to 10 degrees by dawn on Tuesday.”

Tomorrow is set to continue on the damp and windy patterns f today which is expected to follow on for the week.

The Forecaster continued: “Tuesday will be a damp and windy day with scattered outbreaks of rain accompanied by strong to gale force southwesterly winds. Very mild with highest afternoon temperatures ranging 11 to 14 degrees.

“Tuesday night: Patchy rain will clear eastward on Tuesday night and the strong southwest breeze will begin to ease.

“Skies will clear later on and minimum temperatures will dip to between 2 and 5 degrees.”

The national outlook is expected to be “changeable with wet and windy weather at times.”

Carlow Weather’s Alan O’Reilly said that people across the country can expect it to turn colder later but with “sunny spells and scattered showers”

He said: “A very wet and windy start to the day with Belmullet gusting to 98kmh in the last hour and heavy rain in the West is moving East across the country.

“Turning colder later with nice sunny spells and scattered showers.”

THE Foreign Office has updated their travel advice for tourists visiting Turkey following the US airstrike in Iran.

The attack led to the death of General Qasem Soleimani, resulting in protests in the country.

Tourists are now being told to “remain vigilant” due to the attack, as tensions remain high – with the same advice issued for Egypt and Dubai too.

Turkey borders Syria, Iraq and Iran, leading to fears of reprisals against tourists.

The government have warned: “Following the death of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in a US strike in Baghdad on 3 January, British nationals in the region should remain vigilant and keep up to date with the latest developments, including via the media and this travel advice.”

Currently in place are warnings against all travel in the southern region of the country along the Syrian border.

The travel advice was last updated in October 2019, after Turkey launched an attack on the border.

All but essential travel is advised against along the Iraq border as well as in the provinces of Diyarbakir and Tunceli.

Terrorist attacks in the country remain “very likely” with previous attacks including the 2017 Istanbul nightclub shooting, which killed 39 people.

The majority of British holidays, however, are in the north of the country including Bodrum, Antalya and Istanbul, and are without incident.

In 2018, over 2.3 million Brits visited the country, with cheap package deals and holidays popular with families.

PIERS Morgan tore into his rival David Beckham’s acting abilities by claiming three planks of wood had more ability after watching his recent Modern Family cameo.

The Good Morning Britain host marked his return to the show after the Christmas period by feigning surprise that Becks wasn’t nominated for a Golden Globe for his work.

Speaking with tongue very firmly in cheek, Piers said: “There was another acting role over the festive period that caught my eye, which I was amazed didn’t get mentioned at the Golden Globes last night.”

A clip then played of Becks’ acting debut in pal Guy Ritchie’s blockbuster King Arthur, before the ex footy star was seen in the US sitcom alongside Courtney Cox and Stephen Merchant.

Piers continued: “Hollywood watched that and said I think we need more Beckham in our movies.

“They got him in the smash hit TV show Modern Family and he really nails it look at how unwooden this is.”

THE Malaysian resort where Nora Quoirin was staying when she disappeared has confirmed that it is being sued by the tragic teenager’s parents.

Nora, 15, was found dead following an intense and high-profile ten-day search around the Malaysian jungle resort of Dusun in August after she vanished from the house where she and her family were staying.

Maebh and Sebastien Quoirin are claiming at least €40,000 in damages as they claim Dusun holiday resort did not keep it safe and secure.

The Duson director Haanin Bamadhaj last night confirmed that the resort was aware of the legal action before it was reported by the media.

Mr Bamadhaj said an official statement will be issued by the operators of the resort soon.

He told local media outlet Bernama: “Yes, we are aware and we had received it earlier.

“However, I am so sorry I can’t divulge details on when did we receive it… and the resort’s legal team is looking into the suit filed by Nora Anne’s parents.”

The civil lawsuit was filed against Helen Marion Todd, who operates the resort, on Christmas Eve in Seremban Sessions Court, Negeri Sembilan.

Nora’s parents — who say they still have many questions over the teenager’s death — are looking for special damages of 152,707.90 ringgit (€33,355), general damages assessed by the court, damages for bereavement of 30,000 ringgit (€6,552), among others.

The claim — filed by lawyer Sankara Nair — states that tragic Nora went through pain and suffering from August 4 to 13 and say their daughter’s disappearance and death “were caused directly by the defendant’s negligence and/or recklessness, both by way of act or conduct and omission”.

The Quoirins insist that Todd failed to keep the premises safe and secure, did not have CCTV in the premises and did not secure and maintain the latch of a window in rooms they had stayed.

The case management will be heard on January 21 in Seremban Sessions Court.
